| Situated just inland from Belgium’s delightful coastline
and only an hour’s drive from Calais, Nieuwpoort is in an oasis in the
Polder landscape, an area of beautiful countryside that has inspired the
works of countless artists over the centuries.
Whether cruising for one or two weeks, the network of canals and rivers that surrounds Nieuwpoort gives you an unrivalled choice of cruising routes that will all carry you gently through the historic towns of Begium and past sweeping landscapes and rich, natural areas of outstanding beauty. Nieuwpoort is a fishing harbour and pleasurecraft port. It has an overwhelming seafood market, with morning catches from the North Sea and a wealth of fresh fish and seafood restaurants. |
The old town has a market in the square on Thursday afternoons.
There are several parks with tennis courts, a sports hall, swimming pool
and mini golf.
The tree-lined Kanaal van Gent takes you through beautiful countryside from Plassendale to enchanting Bruges. Follow Naar Oostende to medieval Ghent and cruise down the Lys, unlike most of Belgium’s waterways, a natural river. The riverbank’s irises give origin to the heraldic “Fleur-de-Lys”. Into Northwest France, explore up Canal de Calais to historic Dunkirk, along Canal de Veurne back into Belgium and to Spanish/Flemish style Veurne. The narrow Lo Canal leads towards the ancient town of Ieper (Ypres). |
