| The Canal du Midi The Canal du Midi was the inspiration of Baron Riquet (1604 - 1680). It took 14 years to build. Most of the Canal architecture has remained unchanged sinece it was built : rounded stone lined locks, mouse-hole shaped bridges, tree lined banks...... All this and more has helped the Canal du Midi to be declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. From Agde, Carcassonne or Homps, you are immediately charmed by this meandering tree-lined canal as it follows the contours of the hills through the vineyards of the region. Many double locks and some flights of seven add to the interest of this engineering masterpiece. Don't miss the incredible walled city of Carcassonne in the west if you have the time.
