| In the
Vosges valley The Canal Houillères de la Sarre passes through a National Park. This the Lorraine region of lakes and forests, fishing and birds. From the Lorraine to the Alsace, the canal de la Marne au Rhin crosses the entire region. This engineering masterpiece includes two tunnels and the incredible inclined plane at Arzvillers. The boat is driven into a steel tank rather like a lock, and this whole tank with the water and the boats inside is lifted up the hillside. This replaces 17 locks which now lie derelict. The valley of Lutzelbourg is another typical landscape with pine forests and pink stone buildings. the towns of Lutzelbourg and Saverne are particularly attractive. You can also cruise to Strasbourg, where you can moor in the center of town. |
